As the name suggests, the Australian Capital Territory is home to the nation’s capital, Canberra.

Designed as the showpiece of the nation, the layout of the city underwent meticulous planning to emphasise and enhance the natural beauty of the landscape whilst focusing on functionality and future growth, which becomes increasingly noticeable the more one explores the ornamental city.

But there’s much more to the state than the city it was built around, such as powerful observatories and telescopes for helping solve the mysteries of the universe. Even more impressive, at least to me, is Namadgi National Park. While it’s the ACT’s only national park, that doesn’t mean it’s not good. Quite the contrary. It’s one of my favourite national parks I’ve explored in the country. And it’s huge.

What many people don’t realise is that Canberra only forms a small part of the state. More than half of it lies within Namadgi National Park, and it is not only is it home to some of Australia’s highest peaks, but these pristine alpine areas are home to some of the last remaining wilderness areas in the country.

As a nature lover, when I visited the ACT for a month in the spring of 2022, this is where I spent most of my time, hiking trails to magnificent viewpoints while it gently snowed and camping amongst wallabies, proving that while Canberra has so much more to it than parliamentary notoriety.
