Best Places To Watch Sydney’s NYE Fireworks. (For Photography.)

1. Mrs Macquarie Point.
Royal Botanic Gardens.

Of the harbour city’s many outstanding lookouts, one place I visited immediately struck me as the perfect place to photograph the epic New Year’s Eve fireworks extravaganza that people travel from all over the world to see: Mrs Macquarie’s Point.

This spectacular location running along the eastern side of the Royal Botanic Gardens peninsula isolates two of the planet’s most famous architectural icons from the rest of the CBD creating a clean and sleek snapshot and elegantly and unobtrusively showcasing their striking beauty and immense grandeur, especially with the differences in distance between the lookout and the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Opera House and the illusion that comes with perspective, allowing them to look of equal size.

Plus, with the absence of buildings distracting from these striking landmarks and its reasonable perpendicularity to them, this place also provides the perfect opportunity to photograph the magnificent scale and scope of the breathtaking pyrotechnic show while beautifully capturing the essence of the illustrious Harbour City.

2. Quibaree Park.

For the best place to photograph a dynamic and visually engaging quintessential snapshot of Sydney’s world-class lifestyle and scenery in tandem with its unforgettable NYE Fireworks show, Quibaree Park is an outstanding hidden gem that’ll allow you to capture that beautifully.

Occupying a tiny piece of harbourside real estate west of Luna Park, this gorgeous location doesn’t just offer breathtaking angular views of the spectacular Harbour Bridge. It’s also got highrise buildings on one side and towering skyscrapers on the other, while the boats moored nearby and the striking sails of the Sydney Opera House can be seen underneath the bridge, providing foreground and background interest that provide excellent opportunities for strong, compositionally engaging images that you’ll want to hang on your wall.

3. Bennelong Point. (Sydney Opera House.)

Ah, the Sydney Opera House. One of the most gorgeous architectural icons in the world. I can’t get enough of this place and go every time I visit I visit Sydney because it’s such a magnificent place to soak up the city’s unique harbourside atmosphere.

Plus, it is an absolute dream to photograph thanks to its unique angles and curves that always produce incredible images with one of my favourites being the Sydney Harbour Bridge being framed by its spectacular sails of the Sydney House.

However, on an event night like the New Year’s Eve Fireworks, it’s a little more challenging as there are going to be so many people jammed packed into this premium spot so unless you have a towering tripod to get your camera above the other fellow revellers and can guard its legs against their accidental knocks and that’s why I am putting in a fraction lower down the list.

However, it’s still not a place to completely disregard, because if you just want shots of the Harbour Bridge, it offers plenty of fantastic foreshore real estate to park your tripod and photograph the mesmerizing fireworks display.

With a tall tripod, you can try a shot like this.
Otherwise, next to the water gives you uninterrupted views like this.

4. Observatory Hill Lookout.

Another phenomenal place to capture the magnificent pyrotechnic show that signifies the end of one year and the start of another while also capturing a different side of Sydney’s spectacular scenery is from Observatory Hill Lookout. This gorgeous park surrounding a history observatory has the most jaw-dropping views of the Harbour Bridge’s western side.

If you can nab a spot at the rotunda, I’d recommend that for this occasion as it means you’ll be above the crowds to capture clear shots of the bridge and the erupting fireworks. However, even if you don’t, because the park slopes downward towards the landmark, I think people are more likely to sit down to enjoy the show rather than stand, which will hopefully provide you with enough elevation to capture it without blurry heads occupying the bottom section of it if that’s what you wish to omit from your photograph.
