WONDERING WHAT STAYING AT MERCURE DANANG FRENCH VILLAGE BANA HILLS IS LIKE?

Perched high in the mountains and hidden away from the hustle and bustle of the vibrant coastal city of Da Nang lies the wonderfully unique accommodation of Mercure French Village Ba Na Hills. This incredible hotel has 461 rooms in 9 configurations spread out across several buildings in Sunworld’s Ba Na Hills magnificently faithful French Village, allowing guests to this spectacular amusement park a fantastic overnight option to explore every nook and cranny this expansive world-class attraction because, let’s face it, this place is freaking HUGE!

Two of its biggest drawcards are its cable cars, one of which holds the record as the longest single-track cable car in the world transporting you from the base of the mountains to this wonderous world at the top, and more recently, the awe-inspiring Golden Bridge, one of the planet’s newest and most revered architectural wonders. It’s also got alpine coasters, mechanical rides, arcade games, water fountains, manicured gardens, stone castles, peaceful temples, and pagodas to discover. And let’s not forget that in every direction, both within the park and looking out from its many viewpoints, this place is a visual feast for the eyes.

Seriously. I stayed at the ALL-Accor Live Limitless property for three nights during our 10-day visit to the coastal city of Da Nang, exploring all it has to offer and this theme park has to be up there as one of the places I’ve taken the most photos of in my lifetime because every direction was literally a postcard and that’s saying something coming from an avid photographer. So, without further ado, here is my brutally honest review of Mercure French Village Ba Na Hills.

Mercure Danang French Village Bana Hills: Review Overview.

In this honest, detailed and comprehensive review of our stay at Mercure French Village Ba Na Hills, I dive deep into everything that made our stay such an outstanding and memorable one, along with a few grievances I had about it that needed improvement, such as the presentation and feel of the room, the on-site facilities, including the indulgent guest-only indoor pool facility, the restaurants we dined at, the inclusions and exclusions to be aware of as an overnight visitor to Sunworld Ba Na Hills, the conduct of the staff, and the hotel’s location.

Is Mercure Danang French Village Bana Hills Worth Visiting?

Yes. An absolute resounding YES! Mercure Danang French Village Bana Hills is an outstanding world-class hotel that’s basically like the best resort and worth every penny. The rooms alone are gorgeous and atmospheric, but they are only a tiny part of why staying here is one of the best things you’ll do in Vietnam.

As the exclusive accommodation of the magnificent SunWorld Ba Na Hills Complex, guests staying overnight get added benefits that elevate the already magical experience of visiting this endlessly charming and exquisitely-themed attraction, which is not just one of Da Nang’s most unforgettable places to visit, but also easily one of the country’s best and most beautiful amusement parks.

So in addition to riding a record-breaking cable car and roaming the breathtaking grounds that include the French Village, Lunar Castle, Pink Cathedral, Le Jardin D’Amour Gardens, Ling Ung Pagoda and the Tru Vu Tea Tower & Spiritual Zone, folks staying at the hotel also get early just-after-dawn access to the magnificent Golden Bridge, one of the newest and most recognisable modern-day architectural wonders of the world before the day visitors arrive, which is worth the stay alone. But more than that you can enjoy the spectacular views that this mountaintop wonderland affords during the golden hours of sunrise and sunset and see it after dark when it becomes even more beautiful and romantic.

I can honestly not speak highly enough of this place because I was absolutely blown away by it and HIGHLY RECOMMEND getting here as soon as it opens, staying at least one night and leaving on one of the last cable cars as this place is so enormous and spectacular in every direction (not an exaggeration) and it’s not something you’ll want to miss out on as our 3 days here was one of the soaring highlights of our trip through the south-east Asian country.

Hotel de Paris. – French Village.

Rating: 8.5 out of 10.

The building our room was in was the Hotel de Paris, which is right next to the Sunworld Globe and the church.

✔️ Pros.

  • The entire building continued the 19th-century French gothic theming and was adorned with photographs and news articles clippings about various influential French people and their prolific influences over French culture.
  • Superb location, close to the heart of the action.
  • The condition of the hotel was immaculate.
  • Restaurant and reception on the first floor.
  • On an upper floor, there was a photographic history of the French Village and how it evolved from a home away from home for the French during the French occupation to the world-class amusement park it is today.

Cons.

  • Soundproofing – See More Below.

Our Room. – Deluxe King.

✔️ Pros.

  • I loved the moody and atmospheric old-fashioned French romanticism feel the room gave off with its purple colour scheme, dark furniture with elegant details and velvety textures.
  • It wasn’t a conventionally rectangular dwelling, which I always enjoy, particularly when the decor suits the space as flawlessly as it did with this one.
  • The room was generously spacious and the large combined wardrobe and storage wall unit provided adequate space for our belongings.
  • I loved that the bathroom was more of an extension of the bedroom, rather than an entirely separated area, providing seamless and sophisticated flow between the two spaces.
  • The bathtub was divine and had dual-function taps while the shower could be used three ways: as a rain shower, handheld shower and a tap.
  • I liked the artwork. It’s a running joke that I’m not often a fan of the wall art, but the black and white photograph of Gustav Eiffel complimented the room and the French theme so nicely, adding even more charm to an already exquisite space.
  • Everything was spotless.
  • It had a full-length mirror that was in a good place near the door, perfect for checking yourself just before leaving.
  • The location of our room was excellent. We were right next to the Sunworld Globe and had amazing views of it and the exquisite church that was behind it. We were also able to see a street performance and the distant light show from our room.
  • Hotel de Paris also had a restaurant, cafe and bar.

Cons.

  • With much of the furniture next to the window, it was slightly annoying getting to the window to enjoy the view.
  • I loved the bath and its location within the room, but I didn’t like that you couldn’t capitalise on the view while bathing even though it was right next to the window. I guess they don’t want anyone accidentally flashing the folks walking around outside!
  • No soundproofing!

It REALLY needed soundproofing. This was by far the worst thing about staying here. Sunworld Ba Na Hills is such a beautiful place to explore with unforgettable experiences and the Mercure French Village is an incredible accompaniment to that but we could hear everything outside!

It was especially bad because we were right next to the main thoroughfare, so even though the park had closed to day visitors, there were still many overnight guests roaming around the Sunworld globe and the noise from them was permeating through walls and closed windows like there weren’t any.

You could also hear people strolling down the hallway, but the most obnoxious was that very early in the morning, hotel workers outside were walking past with empty luggage carts… on cobblestone pathways, and we could hear every single rattle! So while I absolutely loved Sunworld and just about everything else from our stay at the hotel was world-class and can’t recommend everyone come and visit enough because we loved this place so much, I also strongly advise bringing earplugs and maybe even some earmuffs to put over your earplugged ears because the sound coming into the room while we were trying to enjoy some downtime and sleep was very unpleasant.

However, with that said, I would imagine that the rooms in the other buildings wouldn’t be as noisy because they are further away from the main area compared to where we were and very quiet at night, so that might be something to consider requesting when booking, but who knows when and where the workers will be walking by with carts, so earplugs, folks. Don’t forget them.

Indoor Swimming Facility.

Rating: 8 out of 10.
  • Heated pool.
  • Hot tub.
  • Cinema.
  • Wading pool.
  • Kids water slide.
  • Water polo net.
  • Basketball hoop.
  • Shop.

✔️ Pros.

  • Uniquely a fully indoor pool. It was the only one like this out of the many hotels we stayed at in Vietnam. That was good because Sunworld is up in the mountains where it’s cooler. We even had to wear jackets roaming around the amusement park at times, the only time we ever needed to while travelling throughout the country.
  • The French theming also continued inside.
  • The pool temperature was pleasant, and we stayed in for a long time without feeling cold.
  • We loved that there were more options for things to do than just swimming in the pool and thoroughly enjoying throwing the ball over the net and into the hoop.
  • The hot tub was excellent. Hot and bubbly.
  • The wading pool and cinema were in a different section around the back, so each section felt more private and less busy if there were many people.
  • It’s only available to accommodation guests only and not all visitors to Sunworld.
  • There is conveniently a shop within the facility, so if you forget something, like swimmers, goggles or something like that, you don’t have to go back to your room to retrieve it.

Cons.

  • The pool is not connected to any of the accommodation dwellings.
  • We wanted to use the slide, but it was for kids only. 🙁
  • It’s a bit dark. Not overwhelming so, but that could have been because it was an overcast day when we went and was not letting much ambient light in. Still, the indoor lights weren’t providing as much illumination as I felt there should be, especially for the kids’ wading area around the back.

    • Le Troquet Du Coin – Cafe.
    • Maison Du Roi – Western and Asian Cuisine.
    • Cafe La Terrasse – Cafe.

La Crique Restaurant. – Hotel de Paris.

Rating: 8 out of 10.

✔️ Pros.

  • The buffet breakfast was included.
  • There was a decent selection of food for the buffet breakfasts, lunches and dinner from cuisines around the world.
  • Offers plenty of seating, which were reasonably spaced apart.
  • It was within our accommodation building, so it was very easy for us to get to.
  • There were some dietary symbols to differentiate what dishes contained what allergens.

Cons.

  • It showed whether food was vegetarian, but didn’t show whether it was vegan.
  • Sometimes the “hot” dishes weren’t very hot.
  • The food was okay.

Other Sunworld and Hotel Pros & Cons.

Rating: 8 out of 10.

✔️ Pros.

  • Absolutely magical grounds. Sunworld Ba Na Hills is magnificent, especially the French Village section where the hotel is. Staying here also includes admission to the theme park. (not including cable car cost.)
  • It is expansive and there is no shortage of phenomenal things to do and see, such as:
    • The spectacular Golden Bridge, one of the planet’s newest architectural marvels and a must-see for anyone visiting Da Nang. Guests staying at the hotel are granted early access to it before the day visitors can see it!
    • Enjoy a scenic ride to the top on the world’s longest single-line cable car. (extra cost but discounted for hotel guests.)
    • We loved riding the alpine coasters and other amusement rides.
    • There are tonnes of games in the Fantasy Park arcade, which are all also included.
    • It also has a few other exhibits, such as the Wax Museum (extra cost) and dinosaur animatronics.
    • The gardens at Le Jardin D’Amour are exquisite.
    • You can have tea at the Ling Chua Ling Tu Temple.
    • The views from the observation tower nearby overlook the French Village and are magnificent.
    • Magnificent views literally everywhere. Seriously, this place is a postcard every which way. I’ve never taken so many photos of one place in my life, and that’s truly saying something.
  • The temperature is much more pleasant up here, offering a fantastic break away from Vietnam’s infamous heat and humidity. There were times we even had to wear jackets because it was a little on the chilly side!
  • There is also a guests-only games room, offering ping pong, a foosball table and darts.
  • We happened to be there while there was a festival going on and got to enjoy some street performances. One of them was right outside our room!
  • As guests, we could enjoy seeing the spectacular French Village at night.
  • They also have night shows.

Cons.

  • While staying at the hotel includes entry to Sunworld for all the days you’re staying there, it doesn’t include the cable car journey to get there.
  • The cable cars restrict when you can leave and arrive.
  • Golden Bridge is only open during daylight hours. Even though they offer hotel guests the opportunity to see it before day visitors, it would be nice if they had the option of seeing it right as the sun is rising, which is the most beautiful time of the day and at night, offering a range of experiences.
  • It’s also crazy busy, even when it’s only open for hotel guests, so the earlier the better.
  • Oddly, one of the alpine coasters is an extra cost, while the others are included in the entry…
  • While most of the things to do in Fantasy Park are free, some aren’t such as the Wax Museum.
  • Many of the tea options at the Ling Chua Ling Tu Temple weren’t available.
  • The games room is detached from the accommodation dwellings and feels old, out of date, and out of place compared to everything else. It needs some love to revive the look and feel of it.
  • The spa was closed during the COVID-19 pandemic but never reopened (We visited in August 2023.).

Staff.

Rating: 9.5 out of 10.

✔️ Pros.

  • The staff at Mercure Danang French Village Bana Hills were exceptional. They went above and beyond the help us get to the hotel after we experienced a flight cancellation from the beautiful island of Phu Quoc and significant delays from the two replacement flights that we subsequently had to take to reach Da Nang. This caused us to arrive at the cable car at 9.00 pm when they had closed to the public at 5.00 pm. But they got us to ride up in the world’s longest cable car as the remaining staff were heading home, had someone wheel our bags around and welcomed us warmly when we finally arrived. It was an amazing way to end a long and very frustrating day and I am very grateful to those who went through the effort getting us up the mountain.
  • The hotel staff also kept my hat safe when I left it in the reception area.
  • Overall, most of them had reasonably good English communication skills.
  • We loved that everyone was wearing French attire to fit in with the French theme.

Cons.

  • We thought the cable cars, which is the only way up the mountain, were included in our stay, but that was probably just us overlooking the details and we were surprised we had to pay for it when we got there.
  • There was a slight mix-up with the information about the alpine coasters. The lovely lady said all the rides and attractions at Sunworld were included in our stay. However, when we went to ride one of the alpine coasters, they said it wasn’t. But the other ones inside Fantasy Park were. I’m not sure why one was free and the others were not.
  • There was one lady who wasn’t the most friendly.

Location.

Rating: 10 out of 10.

✔️ Pros.

  • Spectacular location inside the Sunworld Ba Na Hills theme park in the stunning mountain range behind Da Nang. The views from all across this spectacular amusement park are nothing short of gorgeous and is easily one of the city’s must-visit attractions.
  • The only way to get to this magnificent theme park and its hotel is by cable car, which is a magnificently scenic way to get there. One of them is the world record holder, as the longest single-track cable car in the world, offering an unforgettable experience right out of the bat.
  • As it’s up in the mountains, the temperature is much more pleasant up here, and there’s none of that unrelenting humidity Vietnam is famous for. There were even times we had to wear jackets, as it was a little on the cool side.

Cons.

  • While cable cars are the only way to get to the theme park and hotel, it is at an added expense. However, for hotel guests, it comes at a discounted price but is still reasonably expensive.
  • Having cable cars as the only means of access does restrict when you can leave and arrive.

Overall Impressions.

Rating: 9.5 out of 10.

To say we were blown away by staying at this place is an understatement. This hotel and the SunWorld Ba Na Hills complex it is inside of was extraordinarily, and every facet of it was so exceptional that while the noise permeating through the walls was not the most pleasant thing to have to deal with, it didn’t overshadow our overall stay here because we just had such an incredible experience.

It is, by far and away, the best themed hotel we’ve ever been to and the most beautiful amusement park theming I’ve ever seen, which was meticulously detailed, purposeful, faithfully authentic to its French and Vietnamese influences and very high-end. We also loved that it didn’t just stop with the exterior spaces but continued with the decor inside. Even the staff were immaculately dressed in French attire, making us feel even more like we’d multi-verse teleported to the stunning European country.

Something else we also enjoyed as guests was the exclusives that staying at the hotel afforded us, such as the temperature-controlled indoor pool facility with a jacuzzi, slide, basketball hoop, water polo net, kids wading area and cinema.

But what truly elevated the experience for me as an avid photographer was that, as guests, we had early access to visit the magnificent Golden Bridge before the day guests arrived. You have to get there on one of the first cable cars, though, as it quickly got busy even before it opened to them. I did wish that it opened just before sunrise so I could photograph it with the gorgeous soft light associated with that time of day instead of the sun already being up for a while before we were allowed to go there.

However, while waiting for it to open, there were plenty of other areas to take photos because this place was an absolute visual feast for the eyes and as mentioned before, I don’t think I have ever taken so many pictures of one place in my life, so if that’s not an indication of how beautiful this theme park was, given how many I tend to take, then nothing will. And seeing the spectacular grounds lit up at night only made staying at the hotel even more magical.

And I can’t forget the staff, who were overall exceptional, especially the hotel manager (I think) who went so far out of his way to help us get to the top of the mountain when we experienced significant delays with our flight and arrived at the entrance very late at night.

Does The Mercure Danang French Village Bana Hills Have A Pool?

Yes. Mercure Danang French Village Ba Na Hills has a pool. Unlike many of the other hotel pools in Vietnam, this one is indoors. This is because it is up in the mountains where it is cooler and not plagued by the heat and humidity the country is known for.

The facility, which is only available to hotel guests and not day visitors to Sunworld, continues the French Village theme of outside and is heated. The large main pool has a water polo net, basketball hoop and a kids-only slide for water-based fun. Next to it is a jazzuci, while around the back is the pool cinema and a shallow wading pool.

Conclusion: Mercure Danang French Village Bana Hills Review.

Our experience at Mercure Danang French Village Bana Hills was nothing short of extraordinary. The hotel is gorgeous and set within the charming and fanciful world of SunWorld Ba Na Hills, which is full of exceptional French and Vietnamese architecture, and gives exclusive access to the pool and gaming rooms along with early entry to the headline attraction, the Golden Bridge. Furthermore, the unparalleled service of the staff who went above and beyond for us, made this place easily one of the best places we stayed at in Vietnam and somewhere I can’t recommend highly enough. It’s certainly somewhere I’d go back to in a heartbeat. Luckily, they are adding more to it, so soon there’ll be even more to see and photograph.
